If anyone has assumed recumbents up til now only by the advantages concerning ergonomics and aerodynamic, its time to rethink from now on: With the “Scorpion fs Enduro” German recumbent manufacturer HP Velotechnik sends trike fans right out into the woods. Mighty MTB-tires and technology from the automotive construction sector become merged in a very unique way. The stunning alliance will guarantee driving enjoyment on tree-root lined trails. This did not only satisfy the German testriders, all over the world numberous bikers outed themselve as fans since it was launched in July. The eye-catching metallic green trike for offroad use, accentuated by sky-blue functional components can be spotted every day at the booth of HP Velotechnik (FW 300).
The increasing popularity has caused, that the “Scorpion fs Enduro” will be offered as a special edition model starting in Oktober 2013. With an extra benefit to all, who already fell in love with the trail scooter: The basic model costs 3.990 € what is clearly less than the initially announced unit price of 4.600 €.
Maximum riding pleasure is ensured, beneath valuable components, by a chassis that HP Velotechnik already introduced last year by launching the fast S-Pedelec Scorpion fs 26. It provides technology coming from the automotive construction sector as suspension on the basis of McPherson struts or the HP stabilizer system. This in combination with biting disc brakes at the front wheels allows moves that would be simply impossible on a conventional bike.
By introducing the “Scorpion fs Enduro” customers will have a wide range of options to configurate their offroad trike. By using the HP Velotechnik user-defined modular system they can chose between different seats, suspension systems, drive units, brakes, pedals and luggage carriers. The vehicle with the stable, patented folding hinge can even be motorised: Armed with the powerful 250 W electric motor by Go SwissDrive the rider can feel the real enduro spirit – relaxed going uphill, having fun downhill.
It goes without saying that HP Velotechnik trikes all come with two wheels at the front for steering and one at the back for accelerating – but what happens in the middle knows few bounds: “Customize your life” is the German recumbent manufacturer’s motto: for example, the bikes in the Scorpion range can be configured into more than a hundred thousand versions. Yet with the “Scorpion fs Enduro” Trike, which the recumbent specialists are exhibiting at the Eurobike trade fair, they enter unknown territories. The team from Frankfurt area has conjured up a dream metallic green trike for offroad use, accentuated by sky-blue functional components.
The designer coup has already received astonished looks from mountain bikers on the initial test rides – and is set to cause quite a sensation in Friedrichshafen (stand FW 300). The striking color scheme goes perfectly with the intended area of use of the full-suspension Scorpion fs Enduro: the trike, nicknamed Forest lightning, pampers nature lovers who want to put their feet up and casually accelerate along tree-root lined trails. Thrill-seeking bush pilots looking for their latest kick will also find what they are looking for: the low-slung trike allows moves and manoeuvers that would simply be impossible on a conventional bike.
The reason therefore: The trike provides hightech you will not find anywhere else in the bike construction sector, technology that comes from the automotive construction sector. Excellent directional stability on fast bends is achieved through the independent suspension of the front wheels on the basis of the McPherson principle. The HP stabilizer system positioned beneath the front axle wishbones prevents the bike and the rider from leaning outward excessively when cornering hard. The front axle’s anti-dive geometry prevents the dive effect when braking.
Maximum riding pleasure is ensured by a special feature, which may at first glance astound experienced bikers: two disc brakes only bite on the front wheels of Forest Lightning. Even when braking hard, however, there is no risk of being thrown over the handlebars – a benefit of the low center of gravity typically offered by trikes.
The best bit: the brakes can be precisely and individually applied to each wheel to offer impressively dynamic cornering ability. Experienced trike riders can apply the brake to the wheel on the inside of the bend to change direction in a spectacular slide. Straight after the initial test rides, Paul Hollants, co-founder of HP Velotechnik, prophesied: “I can well imagine that the wider tracks in bike parks will become a playground for our Enduro Scorpions.”
Studded turbine, optional with electric drive
Despite the brand new ride sensation, there is no need for bikers to give up the popular tools from the MTB fraction: full-suspension rides are still possible – but the design has dictated that the 200 millimeter total suspension travel is now distributed across three wheels. The rear wheel in particular is therefore subjected to tremendous forces. This is a case for the Nobby Nic tires by Schwalbe. These are light yet have a highly robust carcass. They offer added traction never before experienced by trike riders while accelerating. The Kriftel-based team have intentionally opted for the compact 26-inch wheels for the studded turbine behind the seat so as to combine the advantages of riding a recumbent with the ground clearance required while offroad.
In typical enduro style, mountain passes can be casually conquered. In doing so, the combination of the Shimano 9-speed chaindrive and the 3-speed Sram Dual Drive offers 27 fully shiftable gears. Even more of enduro spirit – relaxed going uphill, having fun downhill – comes up with the motorised version: Forest Lightning can be upgraded with an 250 W hub motor. The engine of swiss provider Go SwissDrive will give you lots of extra power.
The energy is provided by a rechargeable battery with a 446 Wh capacity (36.2 V / 12.4 Ah). Optional there can be mounted even two batteries: With change of the model year customers can opt for the Dual Propulsion-technic of HP Velotechnik and double the range of their electric vehicle. For Paul Hollants, one thing is clear: “Our Forest lightning is certainly not made for rocky routes – even the chassis is too wide for this. Instead, riders can look forward to formidable forest trail surfing in the uplands.”
The increasing popularity was the icing on the cake for the German recumbent manufacturer since the mountain-trike caused excitement all over in the bentriders world and even impressed mountain-bikers. Therefore the new enduro trike
will be offered as a special edition model. Unaffected by this will be the original frame conception: The stable, patented folding hinge enables the trike to be swiftly folded up to a space-saving 125 x 83 x 62 cm for transportation.

Background information on HP Velotechnik
HP Velotechnik was founded by Paul Hollants and Daniel Pulvermüller in 1993. Its production site in Kriftel near Frankfurt employs 30 people (including four trainees) and manufactures approximately 1,700 recumbents per year, making it the European market leader. The bikes are individually built to order by hand and sold via specialist bike dealers.
