Adaptive Triking Items

Some trike pilots have physical limitations that prohibit riding a standard tadpole tricycle without some adaptive items installed. Happily, there are a number of methods to make a trike functional for those with a physical impairment, and such is the subject of this page. Hostel Shoppe, the mega trike and gear supplier located in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, takes an active lead in assisting folks with issues that prevent typical trike riding. From their literature comes the following information and useful products:

Outdoor recreation can provide health benefits for everyone, and triking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, spend time with family and friends, and improve health and overall fitness levels. Triking is also a low impact sport on the body. For a variety of reasons, many people have not been able to enjoy the benefits of cycling, but with today’s variety of recumbent trikes and a number of adaptive aids, the world of cycling is now open to many members of the disabled community. Adaptive triking/cycling is a multi-disability sport, where we take a stock trike and adapt it to the needs of an individual rider, and since no two disabilities are identical, a variety of adaptations can be made.

We’ve helped a number of adults and children with various disabilities from multiple sclerosis, stroke, birth defects, injuries from accidents, and other issues get back out and enjoy the sport they love. Adaptive aids run the gamut from special pedals with or without lower leg braces, crank shorteners, two-into-one brake levers for one handed braking, moving the controls to one side or the other, cane holders, electric assist, seat belts, and other adaptations. JSRL Design – Heel Slings

Hostel Shoppe Adaptive 07

Do you want to keep your feet on the pedals, add power/speed, reduce your fatigue and do so without spending a bundle on clipless pedals and shoes? Well, Heel Slings are what you want.

This simple yet ingenious design allows you to:

– Ride with regular athletic shoes (or sandals if you prefer).
– Pull on the approaching pedal* using your calf muscle (not your shin muscle, like clipless pedals) for less fatigue and more power.
– Eliminates the need to push on the approaching pedal to maintain foot contact which decreases pedaling efficiency.
– Ride safer because it helps keep your feet on the pedals and not under the trike. Large reflectors on the Heel Sling platforms add visibility. Rapidly moving pedal reflectors are VERY visible!
– Quickly and easily lift your feet off the pedals without twisting or turning your foot to disengage the clipless pedal latch.
– Reposition your feet while pedaling for increased comfort. Try that with clipless pedals!
– Special Needs: If you have foot or leg differences, please let us know and we can work with JSRL Design to get you custom parts. JSRLDesign may provide these at no extra charge, but will request feedback on how well these custom parts work to meet your needs.

Product Notes:
You get a Heel Sling assembly for each pedal consisting of
– The cable assembly,
– The platform that includes the reflector and mounting screws and
– The wear bar and the cable tie to attach the bar to the pedal.

Greenspeed – Grab Handles for 16 or 20 inch Wheels

Hostel Shoppe Adaptive 09

Grab Handles are designed to make getting in and out of a tadpole trike easier. Lock the brakes, grab the handles and use your arms to assist your legs. Kit includes two grab handles, clamps and two heavy duty 9.5″ mirror mounts. The mirror mounts clamp onto the threadless kingpins and the grab handles attach to the mirror mounts. Use on single trikes with the threadless kingposts. The Grab Handles do not work on older style Greenspeed trikes with the threaded kingpins.

Product Notes:
– One size fits both 16″ and 20″ wheel trikes with threadless kingpins.

We asked, “Why do the Grab Handles for the 16” trikes use the longer mirror mounts normally used on the 20” trikes?” Greenspeed responded, “We decided to use the longer length mirror mounts for both wheel size trikes, since if we used the shorter ones on the 16” wheels, which are already a bit lower than the 20” wheels, some people found they were a little too low to be properly useful.”
