Armadillo Zack’s Catrike Fatquad

Regular Trike Asylum reader Zachary Mohrmann recenty acquired a Catrike Quad fat-tire backcountry vehicle from Utah Trikes, a custom-built beauty with “go anywhere” ability.   2. Hi Dan,

    Speed is the least of objectives when one is exploring the backcountry. Slow and heavy are relative terms. It’s kind of like comparing a Corvette to a Jeep. If one’s objective is to have a lightweight car that goes really fast, the Corvette is the solution. If one’s objective is to get off the beaten path and into the wilds, the Jeep is the solution. To go really fast on a trike, the solutions include such well-known triples as the Catrike 700, ICE VTX, or Carbontrikes Race. To have a blast in the backcountry, the solutions include such well-known triples as the ICE Full Fat, Azub Fat-Tris, or Trident Terrain. What Zack has done here is add another wheel. Yes, if one compares a speed trike to one of the fatrikes, the weight difference is noticeable. For example, a 700 or VTX comes in between 30-34 pounds depending on the model, but the Full Fat comes in at 49 pounds. Zack’s Catrike Quad probably weighs closer to 60 pounds (just guessing here). Yet, if a rider’s objective is to get off-road into the remote regions where only dirt reigns, then fast/light and slow/heavy simply do not matter at all.

    I love my ICE Full Fat, and for me I couldn’t care less that it weighs 15 pounds more than my Catrike 700. The Full Fat opens a whole new world for me, and does what the 700 could never do, just like the 700 opens up a whole world of riding that the Full Fat could never do. It’s apples versus oranges – there is quite a bit to love about each one! My opinion, based on my physical abilities, is that the new fat-tire bikes, trikes, and quads are not heavy. Heavier than a speed trike? Yes, of course. But that is not even on my radar, and I suspect that anyone who tries a fat tire rig will immediately forget about any speed and weight questions because they’ll be having too damn much fun riding wherever they please, rather than just on human-laid pavement.

    If I compare my ICE Full Fat, or Zack’s Catrike Quad, to my former petroleum powered Jeep, then it becomes very clear that the Jeep, or even a Corvette for that matter, is extremely heavy! And why are these cars so heavy? Simple – most people seem to want to travel dangerously fast. Remove the speed aspect of things, or perhaps even the human penchant for laziness, and it becomes clear that these new super-lightweight fat bikes, trikes, and quads are awesome. Slow? You bet! Heavy? No way! Keep in mind one more aspect of this … When one explores the secluded backcountry, poking along slowly is actually the preferred method of travel, as it allows for a greater appreciation of the natural world.
