archival and resource material for human powered recumbent tricycles

Every trike pannier system known to humans!

Ever wonder how many companies make panniers and cargo solutions for tricycles? Well, so have I, and the answer is zero! Yep, no companies make panniers for tricycles, with the possible exception of Arkel, which makes Catrike frame insert bags specially for Catrike. But if the question is how many companies make panniers and cargo solutions for bicycles, then the answer is astounding! The good news is that if it fits a rack for a bicycle, then it will also fit a rack for a tricycle. If you ever wanted to know and see every cargo solution known to human cyclists, click HERE to visit the Bicycle Touring Pro website and find out now!

Here is the list: Arkel, Radical Design, Lone Peak, Ortlieb, Axiom, Altura, Aviner, Brompton, Brooks England, Bruce Gordon, Carradice, Crosso, Delta, Detours, Deuter, Inertia Designs, Jandd, Madden, Mainstream MSX, Mountain Equipment Co-op, Nashbar, Novara, Pacific Outdoor Equipment Co-op, PanPack, Rixen & Kaul, Robert Beckman Designs, Topeak, Transit, Trek, Two Wheel Gear, and Vaude. Wow, that’s a lot. See ’em all now HERE. You’ll be amazed. In fact, the choices for your trike are so numerous, it’s challenging to decide!

  1. Hey Steve, Smoky Mountain Saddlebags are made specifically for recumbent trikers!

I love mine so much that I just ordered another set :0)

  2. Hey, I forgot about those, even though I did a post on them a while back. There are a number of options designed for recumbents, probably initially for recumbent bicycles though, as few manufacturers of cargo bags see big dollars in the relatively minuscule tricycle market (if they even think about trikes at all – I think we are finally showing up on the radar of the cycling life purists). Thanks for mentioning your bags! They are well liked by what I read from folks who use them.

Steve, the Topeak MTX Quick Trac also fits the bill. I have it mounted to a Topeak Explorer Rack. The fold away panniers may not have the largest capacity of other out there but I’ve been using this system on my ’06 Road since the Trike was new and has carried everything I throw in it with no complaints.

HP Velotechniks Moonbiker recumbent panniers 2×35 Liter volume. Moonbiker bags are custom-tailored for HP Velotechnik racks and gives a good low center of gravity on the rear rack. I belive they are probably also appropriate for many kinds of recumbents and tadpole trikes. Bengt

  6. Actually Smoky Mountain Bags were not originally intended for bicycles – they were crafted by and for 3-wheeled recumbent riders!

  8. I just got my first Trike and lucky for me encountered the lady behind the Smoky Mtn Saddlebags out on our local trails. She is a wonderful lady with a great group of recumbent trike riders she rides with regularly here in East Tn. She explained how she created the bags herself for use with her trike after not finding anything specifically for trikes. I was so impressed with the bags that I ordered the full set the next day from her website. Just got them today. They look great on my trike. Can’t wait to get out in the morning and give both my trike and by saddlebags a go. They are well designed and she went out of her way to make sure they fit my new trike well!

  9. It’s great to hear yet another high endorsement of these trike bags! Seems like everyone who uses them really likes them quite a bit. If this keeps up, these folks are destined for the big-time trike bag market, rivaling the Radical Design side seat pods made in Holland. For trike pilots living in the United States, it will be easier to acquire these bags, without having to get a shipment from overseas.
