Arthur Kneisel’s Trike Carrier

Trike Asylum reader Arthur Kneisel is sharing his custom built carrier for bringing along the trike without having to stuff it inside the car. For those of you who have cars that are not trike friendly, and who don’t want to shell out for a new car that is, here is a less expensive path you may opt to follow. His notes appear below the photos if you are interested. (Bruce Morgan: you could use one of these to carry your ICE Q in the Honda – sure beats the trunk.)

Art's trike rack 01 Art's trike rack 02 Art's trike rack 03For those mere mortals that follow Trike Asylum, but still tote their trike on a car, here is a rather simple rack that has other uses. I made the following trike rack using a standard 60″ aluminum hitch cargo rack, since I was not satisfied with alternatives. My Catrike Villager is modified by Utah trikes and sold as the Annihilator V-81.

Details: 1) Aluminum hitch mount cargo rack [hitch haul lite from], 2) Folding basket adapter for 2″ hitch [from] 3) the wheel cradles are Yakima from ORS racks 4) the support cross member (yellow) is part of an old bedframe (all parts bolted together) 5) standard trailer stop light added for safety

Note: less expensive folding steel versions are available from individual companies, but I could not find a folder in aluminum without making it myself.

Looks like a lot of weight on the rear of that little car.

  2. Jaci Gibson-Henrie says:
I have and love this simple and relatively inexpensive way to transport my trike. I can even roll it up on my Baja!

  3. Romy Quintyn says:

I would like to know how much it weighs. My car can handle 50kgs of bikes + trailer and pull 750kgs. I’m looking for something to put my trike on and 3 regular bikes.
