MIT Study Confirms Trikers’ Wisdom

Tricycling is the most energy efficient form of transportation ever devised, getting the energy equivalent of up to 1,500 miles per gallon (according to an MIT study).

This incredible tidbit of knowledge comes from the website of my good racing bike friend, Men Werro (click HERE to visit). He keeps the locals up to date on how well our coastal city is doing with regards to making human powered humans safer around all those toxic and deadly 3 ton monsters roaming the pavement.

Actually, the original quote used the word “bicycling” instead of what I so happily inserted. I would imagine that tricyclists might get the energy equivalent of closer to 2,000 miles per gallon due to the fact that we are actually comfortable and don’t have to waste so much energy balancing and resting our butts every few miles.

By the way, this link may be the study mentioned for anyone who wishes to learn more about the logical reasons to ditch the car. It’s a rather large 160 page PDF file, and since I’m on an old and slow dial-up computer today, I have yet to confirm this. If this is not the study that includes the information, google around a little and let us know what you find.

  1. Hey Steve, thanks a lot. Can’t help but think this thief knew what he was doing. The half inch cable was cut and taken as well. Also, I should add, we have security cameras all around here, none of them showed any approach or departure of strangers. How did they avoid that ? Most irritating experience !

  2. Bought a Catrike 700R two weeks ago. Just learning to ride it and get on and off gracefully and some SOB stole it. Since there is only one much older Catrike in this town of Davis, how would the thief dispose of the trike ? Any advice ?

    • Oh my gosh Dan! I am soo sorry that happened. It’s pretty hard to use a trike in the town where it was stolen without it being quickly noticed. Trikes are so weird that it is hard to believe this happened. Where would the thief fence the rig, anyway? I assume you already notified the police, but it’s entirely possible it was taken for redistribution to another locale, and if that’s the case, you will probably have to claim it on your homeowner’s insurance (usually bicycles and personal property are included on these policies, as pedal cycles are not cars). I would also recommend putting out a few high quality photos and a description on bentrideronline to get the word out immediately wordwide (still a real longshot however). Please keep us posted, and if you send a good photo or two, along with the serial number, I’ll get it posted on Trike Asylum too, which is widely read. Steve

  3. Tadple trikes most certainly have my vote. I have a two wheel recumbent bike which I used to love to ride. After many thousands of miles of trike riding I decided to get back on my two wheel recumbent just to take it for a ride. It didn’t take long for me to realize I no longer care to ride it. I will take my tadpole trike any day over it’s two wheel cousin. There is no comparison … not even in comfort. Tadpole trikes are just “fun to ride”!!!
